Steel framed housing or house framing as the industry now calls it, has seen massive growth over the last 4 years. The need to build low cost  houses fast means new manufacturing methods had to be used. The industry has changed from welding, blind rivets, self tapping screws, drill screws, structural rivets to using the self pierce rivet process.

Self pierce rivets improve the joint quality from a strength and durability aspect, plus they offer a more cost effective solution from other processes.

If you consider the pop rivet approach where holes need drilling, the pop rivets are then inserted to finish the joint. The frame is then flipped over and the process of drilling holes starts again. ( Large numbers of drill bits are used and need to be factored into the overall cost comparison) Using Henrob self pierce riveting systems and the new manual E frame this process can be achieved in one movement and 4 times faster. The efficiency improvements alone justify the investment.

Again with Health and Safety being a big issue these days, people do not want to weld structures together and put expensive extraction systems in place to extract weld fumes. Its not just the welding fumes that cause a problem it comes down to the durability of the finished joint. HSPR offers a 10 fold improvement in durability when considering fatigue resistance.

Other forms of welding have been tried:

  1. spot welding
  2. plasma welding
  3. mig welding
  4. tig welding

But they all result in the same thing, poor performance in the field, weld failure is another down side to welding steel frames together. Welding failure is not good when you are in the construction market, were health and safety are of the up most importance.

Some companies have tried adhesive and other types of rivets and fasteners, whether that is a lock bolt or Huck fastener. They have all proved to be more expensive and a reduction in the joint performance followed. HSPR will become the standard in light gauge steeling framing applications.
