Henrob, a pioneer of modern day self-pierce riveting, is to roll out a revolutionary new technique for feeding fasteners to robotic riveting systems.

 

 

Henrob’s MagFeedTM technology completely eliminates the well documented problems of feeding loose rivets to robot mounted riveting tools. The difficulty of dressing  conventional blow feed tubes connecting the bulk fastener supply to the riveting tool on a robot arm is designed out, thereby removing the single most unreliable feature at a stroke. It also allows the robot far greater freedom to articulate and improves cycle time over conventional blow feed technology.

 

Keith Jones, Henrob’s CEO comments: “This technology is seen by automotive manufacturers as a major step forward and has been very warmly received. In fact, Henrob have already won a substantial contract from a major European OEM, and, with strong interest from others who wish to evaluate the technology, this is set to become our fastest growing new product.”

 

Roger Doo, Engineering Director, explains “By making use of the dead time during component transfer between a cell or station on a typical automotive assembly line, we rapidly load the desired quantity of rivets to the magazine allowing the robotic riveting tool to maintain continuous, uninterrupted production. Very positive feedback from product trials has lead us to develop several tool configurations including a variant supplying two different rivet types to the same riveting tool. These variants offer particular solutions for rationalisation of the process resulting in reductions of the overall tool count. This benefit, combined with the secondary reduction effect  on related facilities, such as quantity of robots and floor space, can result in substantial savings in investment.

 

In the the late 1990’s, we could see how these ideas might be important for the advancement of our riveting technology so we began work on the concepts and applied for patent protection. The technology has been refined over several years with the assistance of feedback from field trials of prototype systems. We are pleased, just this month, to have been granted a significant method patent, US 7,849,579, covering aspects of the technology. The important patented features include delivery of fasteners to the riveting tool in two stages with the first stage being delivery to a magazine buffer and the second stage delivering from the buffer to the riveting tool, the buffer being docked/undocked from the rivet supply by the robot.”
